The Re-afforesting Freetown City (RFC) Project aims to promote climate action in Sierra Leone through reforestation and afforestation. By 2030, the project aims to plant 10,000 trees and educate 10,000 people about afforestation and reforestation in 50 vulnerable communities in the Western Area of Sierra Leone. With financial support from the Global Greengrants Fund (GGF), National Geographic Society (NGS), and The Nature Conservancy (TNC), 800 economic trees were planted, 200 locals were sensitized about afforestation, reforestation, and deforestation, and 16 youth and women were trained as arborists in the Grafton, Leceister, Malama, and Regent communities between January and June 2025.
RFC Project Activities in Grafton, Leceister, Malama, and Regent
With financial and technical support from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Rome Centre and the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MEES), the Route 360 Solutions Initiative (R360SI) successfully launched the Building Climate Resilience in the Slums Project, aiming to promote climate action in the Kroo Bay, Cockle Bay, and Susan’s Bay slums in Freetown City, Sierra Leone. The project will empower 250 marginalized youth and women in these communities, providing them with the proper skills, knowledge, and tools to reduce climate change. The project will run from May 2025 to June 2025. By collaborating with marginalized youth and women, the project will contribute to mitigating floods, plastic pollution, heat waves, and CO2 emissions, while providing income-generating opportunities in the project communities.
