Our Impact
Job Creation
About 70% (4.8 million people) of the youth, including women, in Sierra Leone, are unemployed, following the limited employment opportunities in the country. The majority of these youths are those living in underserved communities, such as Kroo Bay, Cockle Bay, Thompson Bay, and Susan’s Bay. As a social enterprise, Route 360 Solutions Initiative has created over 100 jobs for underserved youth and women, who work as waste pickers and recyclers, collecting and recycling plastic waste into climate-friendly bricks and pavers for construction activities.
Plastic Pollution Mitigation
CO2 Emissions Reduction
Over 96,000 metric tons of plastic waste is generated annually in Sierra Leone, with only less 5% (4,800 metric tons) being recycled while the rest (about 91,200 metric tons) leaks into the streets, landfills, waterways, and the ocean, causing flooding, marine pollution, and CO2 emissions. Since the beginning of our operation, we have collected more 100 tons of plastic waste; this has used to manufacture our eco-bricks and pavers. We have prevented over 100 tons of plastic waste from entering the streets, landfills, waterways, and the ocean.
Waste accounts for about 1.4% (96,180 metric tons) of the 6.87 million metric tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent or MtCO2e Sierra Leone contributed to the global greenhouse gas emissions in 2021 alone due to the country’s limited waste management and recycling infrastructure. We have recycled about 120 tons of plastic waste while producing our eco-friendly bricks and pavers for construction. In the process, we have saved about 348 metric tons of CO2 emissions. Thanks to our committed waste collection and recycling team.
