Route 360 Solutions Initiative has received funding from the Global Greengrants Fund for our tree-planting project, Re-afforesting Freetown City, which aims to plant 10,000 economic trees and educate 10,000 people about afforestation, reforestation, and deforestation in 50 communities in the Western Area of Sierra Leone by 2030.
The project, directed by our Founder and CEO, Joseph Turay, and led by Mohamed Kickende Conteh and Sarah Tarawally, our Business Development Representative and Community Outreach and Engagement Lead, will officially kick off by planting 1,000 or more trees and educating 1,000 or more people about afforestation, reforestation, and deforestation in five communities in the Western Area of Sierra Leone by the end of 2025.
We hope to utilize the funding from the Global Greengrants Fund with additional funding from the National Geographic Society and The Nature Conservancy to achieve these goals. We appreciate the Global Greengrants Fund and all the other project funders for the financial support in bringing the Re-afforesting Freetown City project to life.
Communities across the Western Area of Sierra Leone have been vulnerable to climate change due to the constant logging of trees, which often leads to flooding, landslides, and other issues. Our aim for this project was inspired by the August 14 mudslide incident in the Regent community, claiming thousands of lives and destroyed properties.
By planting 10,000 trees and sensitizing 10,000 people in different communities, Route 360 Solutions Initiative hopes to significantly contribute to preventing climate disasters that Regent and other communities have experienced over the years.
