After three months of intense training on plastic waste management, recycling, and sustainable construction, Route 360 Solutions Initiative, through the Building Climate Resilience in the Slums project, distributed 25 climate disaster reduction books to youth and women in the Kroo Bay informal settlement in Freetown City.
As one of the most vulnerable communities to climate change in the city, the beneficiaries will be enabled by the books to prepare, respond to, and mitigate climate disasters. This distribution has increased the number to 50 books, with 25 already shared with beneficiaries in the Cockle Bay informal settlement.
During the distributions, the beneficiaries learned about what the books contained, what they needed to know and do as community stakeholders, and how they could transfer the knowledge gained from the books to other members of their communities.
The production and distribution of the books were fully funded by the UNDP Rome Centre and the Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security through the Youth4Climate initiative. Our goal is to share 75 books in Kroo Bay, Cockle Bay, and Susan’s Bay informal settlements. With 50 books already distributed in Kroo Bay and Cockle Bay, the remaining 25 will be shared in Susan’s during the Building Climate Resilience in the Slums project, which is expected to start in August this year.
Route 360 Solutions Initiative not only focuses on empowering youth and women in slums, but also fully equips them to respond to climate disasters, which are very much in the place they call home.
