With so much anticipated in 2024, the Route 360 Solutions Initiative’s team officially kicked off the Re-afforesting Freetown City project in the Regent community with a community engagement on afforestation, reforestation, and deforestation at the Regent community center. Over 50 community members, including the Regent community Councilor, Headman, and other relevant stakeholders, participated in the event.
During the engagement, Yatta Kamara from the Freetown City Council (FCC) engaged the participants on “How Trees Help Mitigate Climate Change.” Sulaiman Barrie, Founder and CEO of Sierra Leone Sierra EcoHeat, deliberated on “Eco-friendly Fuel Alternatives to Reduce Tree Cutting,” while our Agriculture Consultant and Soil Scientist, Sallieu Barba Kamara, discussed “The Environmental Benefits of Trees, Afforestation, and Deforestation.”
The event was chaired by our Business Development Representative and Re-afforesting Freetown City project co-leader, Mohamed K. Conteh. Our CEO, Joseph Turay, COO, Alusine H. Bangura, and other team members were present.
The people of Regent appreciate and welcome our team and the project. The project means a lot to them, especially when their community was affected by the 14 August 2017 mudslide that claimed thousands of lives and destroyed properties.
As one of the four beneficiary communities, we aim to plant 200 to 250 economic trees in Regent after the sensitization ends. These trees will replace those that have been cut down over the years, create economic opportunities for community members, and mitigate exposure to floods and other climate-related disasters.
